Marion Pursley Gilbert, 91, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2017. A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with Dr. Billy Oliver and Dr. Jimmy Asbell officiating. The family will greet friends at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will be private. The family requests that donations be made to Wesley Glen Ministries, 3711 Agape Village Road, Macon GA 31210.

Marion was born in Highpoint, NC to the late Mildred Pursley Gilbert and John William Gilbert, Sr. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean. Marion was a graduate of Mercer University. He served active duty in the Coast Guard from November 1943 to April 1946. Radarman 2nd Class, participated on amphibious invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the Pacific on an LST connected to the Navy. Early involvement in occupation of Japan. Marion was retired from Southern Bell, Bellsouth and AT&T as a district manager. He was a member of Idle Hour Golf and Country Club, U.S. Closed Golf Association and also a member of the Pallbearers Club. Marion was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church and the Mark Anthony Sunday School Class.

Civic activities were President, Columbus-Muscogee Lions Club; Chairman, American Cancer Society, Bibb County Unit, Education Funds Crusade; President, Forward Macon, Inc.; Member, Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority; President, Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce; Foundation Chairman, Southeastern Museum of Aviation, Robins Air Force Base; Chairman, United Way Campaign; Chairman, Board of Trustees, United Way; President, Central Georgia Council on Boy Scouts of America; President, Macon-Bibb County Beautification/Clean Community Commission; Named Man of the Year by Macon-Bibb County Beautification/Clean Community Commission; Received Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America; President, Macon Rotary Club; Robins Air Force Base Community Leader of the Year; Founder of Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins; Member of National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Birge Stewart Gilbert of Macon; daughter, Martie (Ken) Banks of Macon; step children, Wanda (John) Minnick of Macon, Jeff (Mary Ann) Stewart of Hattiesburg, MS and Scott Stewart of Hattiesburg, MS; grandchildren, Martha Banner Banks and Bailey Banks of Macon, Peter (Reba) Hudson of Sterling, VA, Taylor Stewart, Justin Stewart, Rush Stewart all of Hattiesburg, MS.
